"Big Bill" is Bill Ficke, the longtime Denver-area resident and former Denver Nuggets assistant coach with the heart the size of his native New York.
The other day, Ficke sent a check for more than $10,000 to a UNO foundation, representing some of the proceeds from his restaurant's annual salute to the victims and heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.

"'Big Bill' shows big heart on Sept. 11"
Bill Ficke thinks people in the world need to be nicer and learn how to get along.
"That's really what 9/11 is all about," said Ficke, who owns Big Bill's New York Pizza, a popular eatery at Holly and County Line.
To help people get in the spirit of being nicer, Ficke decided to give free food to all his patrons on Sept. 11, last week. All he asked in return was that they donate to a cause he had chosen.
The result? More than $15,000 went to the NBA Colorado Christian Home in Denver, a nonprofit that helps abused...

"South area gets a taste of Long Island" Patrons only have to listen to the big 6-foot-6-inch man greeting them with a New York accent, or read his company T-shirt to experience a little bit of Long Island in Littleton.
The front of his shirt reads "Fuhgeddaboudit" in true City vernacular. The back reads, "Whatevah" with an imaginary New York shrug.
